Treatment Approach

 Modality: Individuals & Family

Treatment Orientation:

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.

Family / Marital

Family / Marital

Family and Marital therapists work with families or couples both together and individually to help them improve their communication skills, build on the positive aspects of their relationships, and repair the harmful or negative aspects.

Family Systems

Family Systems

Family Systems therapists view problems within the family as the result not of particular members’ behaviors, but of the family’s group dynamic. The family is seen as a complex system having its own language, roles, rules, beliefs, needs and patterns. The therapist helps each individual member understand how their childhood family operated, their role in that system, and how that experience has shaped their role in the current family. Therapists with the MFT credential are usually trained in Family Systems therapy.

Humanistic

Humanistic

The humanistic method takes a positive view of human nature and emphasizes the uniqueness of the individual. Therapists in this tradition, who are interested in exploring the nature of creativity, love, and self-actualization, help clients realize their potential through change and self-directed growth. Humanistic therapy is also an umbrella term for gestalt, client-centered therapy, and existential therapy.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal

IPT is a short-term psychotherapy in which therapist and client identify the issues and problems of interpersonal relationships. They also explore the client’s life history to help recognize problem areas and then work toward ways to rectify them.

There are specific Interpersonal therapies, such as Imago therapy, which focus on intimate relationships.

Interpersonal therapy is not to be confused with transpersonal psychology, which is the study of states in which people experience a deeper sense of who they are, or a sense of greater connectedness with others, nature or spirituality.

Eclectic

Eclectic

Many practitioners take an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing upon various aspects of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic methods to create their own custom-made approach. Such therapists often work with their clients to create a treatment plan that encompasses different techniques to best address the client’s particular problems and to appeal to their sensibility.

Frequently Asked Questions {FAQ}

First Session

In the initial session, you will meet with your therapist to discuss the reasons for coming to treatment and goals that you wish to achieve. In addition, when indicated, the therapist will gather individual and family history. Other members of the family and/or significant others may participate in the initial session depending on the situation.

What should I expect after the first session?

In the beginning the therapist will meet with you and depending upon the situation will involve family or significant others in the initial appointments. Generally with children and adolescents, there will be family and parent sessions plus at least one individually with the child/adolescent. After approximately 3-4 assessment appointments, the therapist collaborates with you to develop goals for therapy and will involve family or significant others as needed.

How long are sessions and how often will we meet.

Sessions will be approximately 50-60 minutes. Appointments are usually made on a once a week basis. In some situations, more frequent sessions may be arranged.

How long will therapy last?

Depending upon the goals established the length of therapy will vary. The therapist and you will review the progress of the work together. Based upon this review, goals can be renegotiated and/or treatment can be completed.

Do you accept insurance?

Siegal Eli-Gers is an in-network provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Northwestern University Student Health Insurance Plan. Documentation for out-of-network reimbursement can be provided.

Is my therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything you say in individual adult counseling remains between you and your therapist. When working with children and adolescents there will be occasions when parents will be provided general information about the progress of the therapy with their child or teen. Collaboration with other providers will require a release of information. There are a few limits to the confidentiality. These limits include: you making statements in regards to hurting yourself; hurting someone else; or someone hurting you. Your therapist is required by law to report or take necessary action to keep you and others safe. If you are currently experiencing these kinds of feelings or are being hurt , please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Do you refer out for medication, will you collaborate with a psychiatrist, school social worker or others?

Yes. If the therapist and you decide that medication would assist with treatment, the therapist will refer you to a psychiatrist. If it is determined that you or a child/adolescent needs psychological or educational testing, a referral to a psychologist will be made. Also, the therapists will collaborate with your child’s school as needed. Collaborative efforts with physicians, lawyers and other allied health professionals will occur based on your needs and/or those of the family.
